I've taken to warming up plates in the microwave oven. Pop 'em in, 35 seconds, Voila! Warm plates!

<blockquote>
Hi John

Whoops- if your plates get warm in the microwave, that's a sign that they're not that fit and healthy. I'm assuming you're talking about ceramic plates. I'm curious if all your plates do this? And if these are factory made?

Glazes for ceramics used with food are designed to fit the claybody and be crack-free. That way water and other substances don't get through the cracks. If a piece of ceramics is warming up it likely means that the clay body isn't vitrified and is letting in water (which can get trapped and grow things). A warm piece may also be a sign of an unbalanced glaze formulation that is excessive with microwave excited metallics (which will likely leach).
