I finally did it. I bought my very first tomato. These ones called out to me with their beautiful yellow stripes. They looked as though plucked straight up from a tinged blob of paint on a palette.
I sliced and salted them and ate with scrambled eggs on a toasted English muffin. They were an odd combination of both savory and fruity, but over all I enjoyed it!
My last visit to the OHSU Farmers Market at work yielded a bevy of beige food stuffs:
- - cheddar
- - sturgeon
- - pears
- - golden raspberries
- - potatoes
- - cauliflower
I’ve finally have my market strategy down so that I don’t smoosh any more fruits. I’m using plastic tubs with lids that I bring with me down to the market. I dump my berries in directly and hand back the cartons. This also works well for buying fish. I put the fish in the tub, top off with ice and seal it up.
No more squished rides home for me!
Tonight I’m finally cooking up the sturgeon, served with melon risotto (with melon broth from one of my failed soda making attempts- I shouldn’t have cooked the melon. It’s too buttery tasting for soda.), and broiled cauliflower.
Ah Portland, I love this food laden town!

Heh, yeah I bought 2 quarts of peaches today and a lot of them got smooshed. But that was my own dumb fault. Oh well, they are going to be jam!
Wait. I’m confused. First? And are you saying you’ve never done tomato, egg and english muffin before?
Did I miss something?
Ummm: former outspoken tomato hater here. And the post in which I recant.

McAuliflower has a long standing hatred of tomatoes. To her credit, she has been working through those issues. And that sounds very tasty, I may have to go eat some of that right now.
Speaking of which, I got the first tomatoes out of my garden yesterday. Yay!
I can’t believe you have never purchased a tomato before that one. That is very impressive!
Unless I’ve a good case of foggybrain I always bring my tupperware with me to the market - many a tomato and perfect plum saved!
Who are you and what did you do with Jocey? ![]()
Purdy!
How could you hate a tomato? They’re so tiny and cute and tastey. (but then I’m someone who gladly eats them like apples, by the box.)
