Free Chocolate

free chocolate offerIt kind of smells like viral marketing… but does that matter if there is free chocolate involved?

Nestle currently has an offer of free Chocolatier Baking Chocolate, with your joining of their online chocolate community. I don’t know what exactly joining this community involves, so join at your own risk of chocolate spam.

This appears to be Nestle’s attempt to finally join the ranks of more upscale seaming chocolate. Given the popularity of reporting cocoa percentages, I’m surprised it took them this long to respond to the market pressure. These chocolates aren’t yet available in stores. I am curious how them will compare to the American tradition of semi-sweet chocolate we bakers know in the form of their traditional chocolate chips.

The free chocolate offer seems to have disappeared, perhaps for good, perhaps not. I\’ll check back tomorrow.

For chips, I buy the Guittard – I used to live a few blocks from their plant in Burlingame, which sometimes made the town smell like brownies.

I was disappointed to discover that Cadbury\’s owns Green & Black. It\’s still a great product, but it feels like less of a find now that I know this.

  • I just checked the offer- and the free chocolate stands for all of september. I didn\’t see it till after I went through their sign up.
I too have a preference for Guittard. That\’s what I grew up with. Sucking on the milk chocolate chips aways feels extravagant!

Given how widely availble Green & Black is, I\’m not surprised they are owned by a large beast such as Cadbury\’s. If you can find it, the local chocolate from my neck of the woods is a sweet oganic option: Dagoba Chocolate. They have baking staples, and interesting pairs of flavors in smaller bars. My favorite is the chili infused Xocolatl 74% Dark Chocolate Bar.

I have a hard time with Nestle since that boycott against them is still going on…

  • Ahhh… yes, baby formula. Good point Amy.

It is indeed viral marketing, and the parent site, says exactly that. But free chocolate!

Dagoba Xocolatl – yum!

Pretty sure I saw these last weekend at the Albertson\’s on Royal in West Eugene! I was tempted to buy them but at about $6 a bag it wasn\’t worth it for the plain old cookies I was planning :)

  • Thanks for the Eugene Sighting… am curious.
