Liquid Nitrogen Brain Storming

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

My work has around 10 gallons or more of liquid nitrogen to dispose of in the next few days. We don’t have the time to let it evaporate so we’re likely to have an ice cream making party!

Additionally, I’d like to freeze some alcohol (drinkable, not lab grade).

What else?

wanting to go persue the El Bulli cookbooks…

Using my Ben and Jerry’s Cookbook, I made up a double batch of vanilla using some of my bourbon based vanilla, a single batch of great salty chocolate peanut butter.

The vanilla was good, but the chocolate peanut butter was intense! Very salty rich, I blended the peanut butter into the base as opposed to making a swirl with it.

The process worked well and was really easy. As this is likely to be a regular occurance this summer, I will take pictures next time!

Ice cream and drinks are fun. In college we also used to do the ubiquitos freeze things and drop them off of tall buildings.

The most cringe worthy came from three boys in my dorm who decided to freeze an already frozen chicken then stick 3 M-80s in its cavity in an attempt to send it to space. Let’s just say pieces of flaming frozen chicken that rocketed towards their heads and not to the moon almost made them candidates for a Darwin award.

Liquid Nitrogen ice cream is the BEST! Don’t forget to put alcohol IN the ice cream – kalua and bailey’s work quite well with chocolate! When can I come over?!

  • Oooo chocolate kahlua… drool.
I think we’ll be doing it again next week! I’ll come find you! :)

If you’re still thinking of doing some El Bulli-style cocktails, I’d love to be a part of it. Drop me a line, I’ll even go buy a whipped-cream dispenser, I’ve been wanting to experiment with foams!

  • Cool Jeff! I just emailed you.

Hey, the ice cream sounds great.

I came across this and thought of you: 1001 things to do with liquid nitrogen. I don’t know if you have any left, but some of these things sound cool.

  • Oh what a great list! Thanks- I’ll bring this into work!

J – Did you hear an NPR story – I think it was this weekend – about this? This is what I get for listening to too many podcasts. It totally made me think of you. If you have no idea what I am talking about, let me know and I will dig it up.
