I’ve been distracted being a voyeur of the web lately. Not that I haven’t been thoroughly entertained by…
- Luke Chueh’s disturbingly poignant and dark paintings of teddybears, monkeys and chickens.
- losing my recipe for really good peanut butter based rice crispey treats that I had googled and was going to post about. Oddly, this recipe didn’t call for marshmallows. Now I can’t find it.
- the entries for the Government Food MRE competetion that are rolling in. I must get off my butt and make my entry.
- Alice Medrich’s amazing chocolate cookbook, Bittersweet. I don’t know why I waited so long to pick this up. Its amazingly researched, well thought, and inventive. Exploring the shiny crackly tops of brownies, and baked mousse is my kind of research.
- Anthony Bourdain’s Les Halles Cookbook. This cookbook cuts through the issues of organic, sustainable, and local food and reminds us of the core: to give a damn about what we eat. This book has a nice authoritative voice that doesn’t leave room for doubt, which is a nice change of pace.
- Ben Frost’s satyric collages have now placed the image of Hello Kitty holding a pink gun in my head.
- getting excited planning for Sweets and my three week trip in Japan. We’re biting down and finally adventuring to Shikoku, where a friend of ours has been teaching English for the last eight years.

Joc,
I so much want to visit Japan, but I’m afraid at this point it’s just not going to happen.
- I’ve been having a difficult time biting down on how much its going to cost to make this trip! having a friend there is a big help monetarily and emotionally.

You’re going to Japan? Wow I’d love to go. It’s so expensive. How much are your plane tix? Maybe you know how to get a deal that I don’t know about.

- We couldn’t find a good deal for when we were going. From the left coast, ~$900 each. We ran into alot of problems trying to get tix out of travelocity. We searched out our itinerary, came up with tickets for $750 (including tax+fees), but there was no buy button! When we called them up to purchase, they brought up the same flights and quoted us twice as much… really ticked me off. We ended up going with some small player site that ended up being cheaper than all the big guys.
Yeah, its going to be an expensive trip- even before we get there!

Oh, I love Japan. My favorite part was the green tea icee from one of the Japanese places. I can’t remember the name of it, but it had a number one on the cup. (We took half a roll of pictures of me eating the icee on my last day there – my 4th of the trip- because I loved them so much. I was really sad to leave them.) But being a food lover, I can truely tell you that you will eat the most yummy food ever. If you want to know anything of the greatness that I experienced, let me know. Oh, and the best advice I can give you is to eat an authentic Japanese breakfast at least once. Complete with fish, miso and rice. It is to die for.
- thanks Sal- we’re looking forward to doing just this. Do you have your trip experiences written up on your blog?
