Beyond Organic

Joel Salatin of PolyfaceWe’ve seen Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma coming. You could hear this train of a book whistling miles away. Pollan’s articles on the use of corn in Harper’s, New York Time’s Magazine, the Los Angeles Times were laying down the tracks.

Mother Jones is running a wonderful excerpt from Omnivore’s Dilemma, highlighting Pollan’s meeting of Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms. Salatin has put his foot down, firmly in his land and said no to the government’s organic standards: “We never called ourselves organic – we call ourselves ‘beyond organic.’ Why dumb down to a lesser level than we are?”

Mother Jones’ excerpt, No Bar Code.
Michael Pollan’s readable index of magazine articles.

Thank you, my dear, for the link.

While I find much of Michael Pollan’s work to be over my head (or over my heart: he’s pretty scientific), this was a perfect piece.

I added it as P.S. on my most recent blog piece, which tied in beautifully with Jim and Becky, the people raising pigs and chickens at TLC (Tastes Like Chicken) Ranch. Two personal heroes of mine.

THANK YOU.
