chicken_in_milk.jpgI have to admit, when I learned of the Paper Chef ingredient list, my heart sank. I was so looking forward to crispy potatoes with chorizo and goat cheese… and cabbage is an entirely different set of food issues!

During my childhood in England, I was repeatedly tortured by boiled cabbage wielding nuns who thought my food pickiness issues were something to be challenged. Of course, I showed them, (well, everything I ate for lunch that is- food re-runs, yuck!). Cooked cabbage is something I left back in England, until tonight.

Only because of the paper chef event have I decided to give it a go, and I’m not even whimping out with a coleslaw dish! The ingredient list is chicken, lemons, potatoes, and savoy cabbage. I decided to use this as an opportunity to test an unsual recipe out of my new Jamie Oliver cookbook from my secret santa: Chicken in Milk. I added small potatoes and sliced cabbage to the pot too, and sat the browned chicken on top, then poured the milk with lemon zest, garlic, sage, and cinnamon stick in. Using my probe thermometer, I cooked it to 165°F.

Our chicken is fabulous… juicy, slightly lemony, and perfectly seasoned. The potatoes are creamy, the cabbage is however, cooked to almost nothing, but is still juicy good I am shocked to say.

There is one… er, more interesting, note to this flavor ensemble… which was lurking in the back of my mind when I tasted the sauce that had collected in the bottom of the pan. I gave Sweets a fork full of juicy cabbage and chicken and his eyes met mine and lit up upon tasting it: It tastes like lemon Trix!

As I have mentioned already, this can only be a bad omen. Really, this is the second sign of the coming of the end of the world. I hope you’ve stocked up on bottled water and canned soup, I however am going out to finally get a box of Trix.
