My quick bite to eat today turned into a little something not so quick. I hate it when that happens!
I’ve had one of those headachey days and found myself craving Christmas cookies like a mad woman. Then I realized that I hadn’t had lunch, and a good quick meal would probably fight off my urge to attack the bakery down the street. So I scrounged around, and our blessed freezer answered my plea.
Out came the frozen whole wheat burger buns, and a fake meat patty (Harvest Burger to be exact). Thawing was on the way when I was stopped dead in my tracks by the realization that I couldn’t possible make this burger without grilling up some onions in red wine. And I can’t have grilled onions with red wine with out horseradish too. See how this meal grows? And I can’t possibly scarff this burger without running up to my softbox to take a picture!
One of the Ultimate Ways to Dress Your Burger:
Onion Jam Topping
To a sauce pan over medium heat add:
- one Tbs olive oil
- smidge of butter
- one thinly sliced small onion
- one tsp thyme
- a good glug of red wine, ½ cup
- and a good seasoning of salt and pepper
Depending on your hunger level, either slowly simmer this on low with a lid on for about 30 minutes, removing lid and evaporating liquid off… or cook over med heat with the lid off till your liquids have evaporated and the onions are cooked.
Meanwhile toast up your buns, and slather with a concotion of half horseradish half mayo or sour cream or creme fraishe with a sprinkle of black pepper.
Add a layer of onion mixture to your bottom bun, one cooked patty, a bit of lettuce, and top ‘er off with your bun. And if your feeling really decadent, sneak in a slice of bacon and a slosh of bbq sauce. Hey, just because your being seduced doesn’t mean you aren’t willing!
